Background to The Cardiac Shadow

Based on a true story – The Cardiac Shadow is an historically driven drama about the experiments conducted in the Dachau concentration camp by Dr. Sigmund Rascher and overseen by Heinrich Himmler, the Third Reich Commissioner for the Strengthening of German Nationhood.

Four women are procured from the Ravensbrϋck concentration camp, hand picked for a series of experiments specifically designed to measure the human body's endurance to extreme temperatures - tests that would benignly come to be known as the Cold Conference.  The voices of these four women have since disappeared.  The play asks the question: “Where does the human spirit go when the body must remain behind, frozen inside an atrocity?”

Women’s stories from the Holocaust and specifically the women prisoners of the Ravensbrϋck concentration camp are vastly under-represented in historical accounts of World War II.  In our current era of dehumanizing language and violent actions towards society’s most vulnerable, THE CARDIAC SHADOW is more than resonate.

This full-fledged multi-media production under the direction of Northern Light Theatre’s Artistic Director Trevor Schmidt will incorporate dance, choreographed by The Good Women Dance Collective, an intricate multi-media design created by Katrina Beatty of Loud Whisper productions, along with an immersive sound scape of the spoken text and original music composed by Sound Designer Dave Clarke.

All in all, THE CARDIAC SHADOW will feature the work of 17 artists, making it one of the biggest artistic endeavours our company has undertaken in the past seven years.  We are excited to be creating a show that involves so many mediums and creative collaborators.

The run of the Cardiac Shadow will also coincide with World Holocaust Day on January 27, 2019
We hope that you will consider taking in one of our Salon Events during this production.

NLT's FRANK N' STEIN
WAS A GRAVEYARD SMASH!

NLT's FRANK N' STEIN

Thank you to everyone who braved the horizontal rain on the evening of Sunday November 4th
to receive their very own souvenir beer stein, enjoyed a gourmet hotdog prepared in Grindstone Theatre’s pub-styled restaurant, and then laughed along with our performance of “Gertrude & Alice”  in NLT’s first annual Frank n’ Stein Fundraiser!

NLT's Frank n' SteinIt was a grand old time.  The evening starting with a hilarious reading of the Dr. Seuss parody “Green Buds and Hash” by Dana Larsen, performed by “Alice B. Toklas” herself!

With suggestions drawn from the audience, “Dickie” then led an illuminating discussion about art that would rival the Paris Salons of the 1920’s.

NLT's FRANK N' STEIN

And we were even joined by a surprise Guest!

NLT's FRANK N' STEIN

Frankenstein!

Jake Tkaczyk, NLT’s artistic associate for the 2019-2020 season led our audience in a craft session, with detailed instructions on how to make your very own Frankenstein hand puppet:

NLT's FRANK N' STEIN

NLT's FRANK N' STEIN

And one of our lucky raffle winners took home their very own Alice B Toklas and Gertrude Stein Puppets!

NLT's FRANK N' STEIN

Closing the evening, Frankenstein performed Alice Cooper’s “Feed My Frankenstein” in his own inestimable style.

NLT's FRANK N' STEIN

Special Thanks to Josh Mellot (keyboard and accompanist) Tom Edwards (Frankenstein), Davina Stewart (Alice B. Toklas) NLT’s own Artistic Director Trevor Schmidt (Dickie), and Jake Tkaczyk (not pictured) for a delightfully entertaining evening.  And thank you to Grindstone Theatre for hosting our first ever Frank n’ Stein event.

NLT's FRANK N' STEIN

All funds raised at NLT’s fundraising events go towards the company’s artistic programming and all donations, no matter the denomination, will receive a charitable tax receipt. Thank you to NLT’s donors and finders for your ongoing support.
