3 Great Raffle Prizes at Frank n’ Stein!

As a part of our fundraiser we will be raffling off 3 raffle packages of goodies, including two memoir / cookbooks by Alice B. Toklas, and Gertrude et Alice by Tom Hachtman.

Raffle prizes

Long before Julia Child, Alice B. Toklas was sampling local French cuisine, collecting recipes, and with her partner Gertrude Stein, hosting dinners and salon nights for the expat writers and artists who resided in Paris between the two World Wars - including Hemingway, Fitzgerald, Matisse, and Picasso.   Part cookbook part memoir, the Alice B. Toklas Cook Book, and Alice B Toklas Murder in the Kitchen both include stories of early twentieth century Paris interlaced with traditional French recipes for Coq au Vin and Boeuf Bourguignon, as well as delightful dishes such as Salad Aphrodite “ideal for poets with delicate digestion”, and the decadent desert Custard Josephine Baker. In Murder In The Kitchen, Alice ponders the ethics of killing a carp before stuffing it with chestnuts and decorating the fish to amuse Picasso at lunch.

Interesting aside, each book also contains perhaps the earliest instructions for haschich fudge “which anyone could whip up on a rainy day" and promising “brilliant storms of laughter and ecstatic reveries”.  This particular recipe caused a panic with Harpers publishing, and was removed from the Alice B Toklas Cook Book’s first printing in the United States. But the scandal turned her cookbooks into best sellers, introducing a generation to cannabis infused edibles and coined the popular slang term “toke” after the writer herself.

“A book of character, fine food and tasty human observation.”
The New Yorker

“Jazz Age Paris collides with Punk Rock New York in Volume Deux of Tom Hachtman’s Cult Comics Classic Gertrude’s Follies. This full-color collection includes more incomparable strips that explore art, culture, sex, and Gerturde Stein and Alice B. Toklas’ singular amour. The grand dames and their pals Pabs Picasso and Ernie Hemingway confront diet fads, writer’s block, vampiric critics, Nazi aesthetes, sycophants, celebs, and Gay Paree, all with the aid of Alice’s very special brownies. It’s brimming with inspired silliness and an irresistible joie.”

Background to The Cardiac Shadow

Director Trevor Schmidt has been interested in THE CARDIAC SHADOW for over ten years, since first discovering the work of Clay McLeod Chapman and THE PUMPKIN PIE SHOW, a rigorous storytelling style of theatre presented without a set or costumes and focusing simply on the ethereal connection between story-teller and audience.

Mr. Chapman’s work has transitioned to screenplays, novels and comic book writing, and it seemed unlikely that anyone would be producing his earlier works - particularly this historically driven narration of 5 monologues about the inhumane experiments conducted in the Dachau concentration camp by Dr. Sigmund Rascher, and overseen by Heinrich Himmler, Reich Commissioner for the Strengthening of German Nationhood.

THE CARDIAC SHADOW has only been produced once before, as a staged reading, and
Mr. Chapman was excited to hear NLT’s request to turn his play into a full-fledged multi-media production, incorporating dance and an intricate multi-media design that will include historical and filmed footage.

This production provides NLT with the opportunity to collaborate once more with the Good Women Dance Collective, who we last worked with on NLT's production of WISH in 2016.  It also provides a new opportunity to collaborate with Katrina Beatty of Loud Whisper Productions for the film sequences that will be interwoven into the production’s design.

In addition to the four women who make up the Good Women Dance Collective, NLT has also hired five voice-over actors to record the five monologues as a part of the production’s intricate sound design to be created by Dave Clarke.  All in all, THE CARDIAC SHADOW will showcase the work of 17 artists, making it one of the biggest artistic endeavours NLT has undertaken in the past seven years.  We are excited to be creating a show that involves so many mediums and creative collaborators.

Most importantly for us and our season - which focuses on A Women’s Body- women’s stories from the holocaust and specifically the women prisoners of the Ravenbrϋck concentration camp are vastly under-represented in historical accounts of World War II.  In our current era of dehumanizing language and violent actions towards society’s most vulnerable, THE CARDIAC SHADOW is more than resonate.  It is the sort of work that NLT strives to do – presenting relevant subject matter for a modern audience in a heightened theatrical style, meant to spark dialogue and lead to meaningful conversations.

The run of the Cardiac Shadow will also coincide with World Holocaust Day on January 27, 2019

We hope that you will consider taking in one of our Salon Events during this production.

SHADOW THEATRE

The Comedy Company
by Neil Grahn (A world Premiere)
October 24th to November 11th 2018
From the head writer of CBC’s The Irrelevant Show

The Comedy Company

An extraordinary true Canadian story of the members of the Princess Patricia's Light Infantry Division! Company members were asked by their commander to put together a comedy/musical revue to entertain the troops. During some of the most difficult fighting of the war they would conceive, write and perform comedy sketches and musical parodies to lift the morale of the soldiers. With the help of surprisingly realistic comedy scenes and startlingly pretty cross-dressing performances they become wildly popular. What inspires comedy and light entertainment when you are surrounded by death?

A Fictional Recounting of an Absolutely True Story, in commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I.

CONVERGENCE
November 15 – 17, 2018

Convergence

This year’s CONVERGENCE is all about collaboration.  Ainsley Hilyard brings together a huge team of artists to create the GWDC’s first full-length movement work that examines fear as a method of control.  Words can be weapons, thoughts can be cages and our peers can become targets.  How do power structures capitalize on our vulnerability and use our fear against us?  How are we letting these fears control our behaviours and shield our views of the truth?

CONVERGENCE 2018, features choreography by Ainsley Hillyard, and performances by GW collective artists Alison Kause and Kat Stashko, and local artists Bridget Jessome, Danielle Peers, Katherine Semchuk, Lady Vanessa Cardona, and Mustafa Rafiqu.

Friday, November 16th will be a RELAXED PERFORMANCE with ASL interpretation.  Relaxed performances understand the needs of patrons who make noise and/or who may need to stand, walk, leave, or re-enter the performance.  They feature low-level audience lighting throughout the entire performance to accommodate any necessary audience movement.
