Hello, all!

So many NaturElle Girls came out to our first meeting/reading/fundraiser, and everyone that attended got BEAVER FEVER! It’s contagious!

We had hot dogs from FAT FRANKS, and cookies from SUGARED & SPICED and the adults got wobbly pop that my mom brought for the bar. Everyone got a paper bag craft and learned how to make beaver puppets that they can play with at home. Each one was different, like a snowflake or a person, and each one is special and perfect, just the way it is - even the ones that got the ears wrong.

We were lucky to have so many friends come from far and near to join us. Some came all the way from Calgary! Everything is better with a friend along to help you. And we learned that fundraisers are a LOT of work. So I want to make sure to give a special thanks to all the volunteers that helped out!

Keep your eyes open for our next meeting!

Origin of the Species

2018-2019 SEASON

A WOMAN'S BODY

This year's theme centers on women's bodies - their right to autonomy and the indomitable spirit that can reside within. From a large-scale multi-media work incorporating movement and dance in collaboration with the Good Women Dance Collective to a quietly disturbing confession about the controversy and conflict surrounding a late-term abortion in partnership with Azimuth Theatre – all three plays in NLT's 2018-2019 season will present an unflinching look at the physical, psychological, and emotional violence inflicted on women and their bodies.  We expect our Salon Series Events to be filled with thought-provoking discussion.

ORIGIN OF THE SPECIES

by Bryony Lavery

October 12 – October 27, 2018
Preview October 11
Studio Theatre, ATB Financial Arts Barns
10330-84 Ave.

Featuring Holly Turner as Molly (last seen in Northern Light Theatre’s Production of THE TESTAMENT OF MARY) and Kristin Johnson in her NLT debut as Victoria

Evolution, feminism and comedy come together in Origin of the Species.

In Bryony Lavery's quirky Origin of the Species, ardent archaeologist Molly unexpectedly finds a four-million-year old female body in the Olduvai Gorge. Upon kissing her lips the four million year old woman comes to life. Molly smuggles the woman back to England and names her Victoria, after Molly’s grandmother.  They spend New Year’s Eve together, where Molly tries to teach Victoria what it means to be a woman in the 21st Century, while in turn learns much more than she ever could have expected.

THE CARDIAC SHADOW

by Clay McLeod Chapman

A Co-Production with the Good Women Dance Collective

January 18 – February 2, 2019
Preview January 17
Studio Theatre, ATB Financial Arts Barns
10330-84 Ave

Featuring the women of the Good Women Dance Collective, with multi-media design by Loud Whisper Productions

This is a True Story - Four women from the Ravensbruck concentration camp were hand selected by SS Second Lieutenant Dr. Sigmund Rascher and “volunteered” for experiments that would eventually come to be known as the cold conference. Designed to determine the body’s endurance to extreme temperatures, these tests would unexpectedly revealed the capacity of the human heart. The voices of these women are now gone, but Clay McLeod Chapman’s riveting play demands that they not be forgotten. Where does the human spirit go when a body must remain behind, frozen inside an atrocity?

19 weeks

by Emily Steel

March 29 – April 14, 2019
Preview March 28
Studio Theatre, ATB Financial Arts Barns
10330-84 Ave

Featuring Vanessa Sabourin in her NLT debut

The words are rattling because the story is real. Everyone knows someone who has had an abortion or lost a pregnancy - even if they don’t talk about it.  In 2016, playwright Emily Steel had a termination after her baby was diagnosed with Down Syndrome. This is her story, told honestly and publicly, because there are so many more stories out there. We want 19 weeks to be part of a bigger conversation.

6 GREAT REASONS TO STAY AND PLAY IN OLD STRATHCONA'S THEATRE DISTRICT

1. Something for Everyone All Year Long
In Old Strathcona’s Theatre District, on every single night of the year, there is at least one theatrical production in performance, presented by a diverse group of professional theatre companies and Indy artists - ranging from comedy to drama, true stories, live improve, new work and iconic classics.  There really is something to suit everyone’s taste every single night of the year.

2. Get Close To The Action. Great Story Telling In A Small Theatre Setting
Each theatre company strives hard to deliver impactful and unforgettable work in an intimate setting.  The venues range in sized between approximately 200 seats (Westbury Theatre in Fringe Theatre Adventures, Backstage Theatre in Fringe Theatre Adventures, Varscona Theatre, Roxy on Gateway, and Walterdale Theatre) to approximately 50 seats (The Studio Theatre in Fringe Theatre Adventures and Grindstone Theatre.)   We all value story telling and the collective experience that can only occur when a group of people enter a room together to enjoy a live theatrical performance.

3.  Support Local
Each of our companies are made up of Edmonton Artists, committed to producing our art locally for Edmonton audiences. We range from veteran companies founded over 40 years ago, to new and emerging artists just cutting their teeth.  The money you spend supporting our work stays in Edmonton.

4. Great Amenities
With a wide selection of restaurants and shops and services to discover, Old Strathcona is a great destination with an abundance of experiences to add to your Theatre Night out – making it different each time.  You could even add a stay at the Metterra or Varscona hotels for a full weekend retreat of relaxation and entertainment.

5. Affordable
In the Theatre District you will find some of the best ticket prices in town, with prices ranging on average between $12.00 - $40.00.  Each company that presents within the Theatre Districts also offers specially priced performances such as 2 for 1 nights and Pay What You Can Events.  Parking is also quite reasonable and accessible…

6. You can see a play even during the Day! Add a matinee to your time spent in Old Strathcona
Many of the Theatre Companies that perform in The Theatre District offer weekend matinees.

Take in a Saturday Matinee after a morning of shopping at the Old Strathcona Farmer’s Market, or a Sunday Matinee after enjoying Brunch at one of Whyte’s great restaurants, such as Under The Highwheel, The Almanac, El Cortez, or The Next Act.  It is a great way to meet up with friends and spend an afternoon.  (Matinee prices are also often lower than regular evening performances).

WHAT’S ON IN OLD STRATHCONA’S THEATRE DISTRICT

As an active partner in Old Strathcona’s Theatre District, Northern Light Theatre is working hard to find new creative ways that we can collectively work together, boost each other’s success and create a stronger voice for the arts in Edmonton.  We are dedicated to not only telling you about NLT, but all of the companies, professional and indie that work and perform in Old Strathcona.

Teatro La Quindicina

Teatro La Quindicina

The Importance of Being Earnest by Oscar Wilde, July 12 - 28

Teatro la Quindicina always strives to provide their July audiences with something that’s just a bit delux, and this season is no exception with Oscar Wilde’s best know Comedy The Importance of Being Earnest. This epigram-packed tale of mistaken identities (deliberate and accidental) and romantic negotiations (unwitting and premeditated) is replete with the sort of articulate whimsy Teatro audiences adore.

Jeff Haslam directs a glittering ensemble of house favourites: Mark Meer and Ron Pederson are Jack Worthing and Algernon Moncrieff, Louise Lambert and Shannon Blanchet are Gwendolen Fairfax and Cecily Cardew, joined by Julien Arnold, Mat Busby, Cathy Derkach, plus Leona Brausen in her sure-to-be riotous first assumption of the role of Lady Bracknell.
