GIVING BACK ON
#GIVINGTUESDAY
NOVEMBER 28th

#GIVINGTUESDAY

After the commercially driven days known as Black Friday and Cyber Monday comes #GivingTuesday – a day to give back to our communities in a way that is meaningful to both the donor and the recipient.

GivingTuesday harnesses the potential of social media and the generosity of people around the world to bring about real change in their communities; it provides a platform for them to encourage the donation of time, resources and talents to address local challenges. It also brings together the collective power of a unique blend of partners – non-profits, civic organizations, businesses and corporations, as well as families and individuals - to encourage and amplify small acts of kindness. Across Canada and around the world, GivingTuesday unites communities by sharing our capacity to care for and empower one another.

NLT relies on the generosity of its donors all year round to ensure we can achieve our mandate of creating thought-provoking and conversation-starting theatre. This year, we wanted to find a way we could also give back. We are asking for your financial support – and in return we will donate our talent! For every $50 donation received as part of our #GivingTuesday campaign, NLT will provide a student from Strathcona High School with a ticket to our production of “Do This in Memory of Me,” by Cat Walsh.

Do This in Memory of Me

NLT has a long history of fostering emerging artists and connecting with students who are moving toward careers in theatre (and who are the future patrons of theatre!); this campaign is a wonderful opportunity for NLT to engage in with the next generation of emerging artists.

Our goal is to send 50 students to the show – for a campaign total of $2,500. All donations receive a tax receipt, and contributions are being accepted for this campaign until February 28th. (To receive a tax receipt for 2017, funds must be received by December 31, 2017.)

SCONA THEATRE COMPANY

SCONA THEATRE COMPANY

The Scona Theatre program is built on a foundation of great passion for music, dance and theatre and the value of building a community of actors, dancers and singers. The school offers Drama 10, 20, 30; Improvisation 15, 25 and 35; Musical Theatre 15, 25, 35; Technical Theatre 15, 25, 35; and Dance 15, 25, 35.

The Strathcona students are a part of three improv teams at the school, extra-curricular musical productions, the Cappies program, and have embraced dance with a vengeance; they hope to bring more high school theatre to the city of Edmonton. Senior theatre students are involved with our in-house and city high school one-act festivals (an adjudicated festival of student work). Scona students also travel for workshops and theatre experiences, including to London and New York – they have even performed at the Edinburgh Fringe!

SCONA THEATRE COMPANY

Strathcona is a special place for theatre students and we strive to create varied opportunities for the theatre students. Additionally, we reach for theatre that goes beyond our walls and into the community. Our students are encouraged to strive for learning beyond their school experience. During the summer, many of our students study at Artstrek or the Foote Theatre School to build upon their school season of experience. In addition, our students involve themselves in the Nextfest Emerging Artists’ Festival at Theatre Network in Edmonton. Through studies in and out of school, students act, write plays, and with great good fortune work with mentor artists in everything from Directing, Dance, and Acting to Stage Management, Design and Technical Theatre.

SCONA THEATRE COMPANY

Our students are participating in all sorts of theatre – from local community theatre productions to larger houses like the Citadel. Scona students have studied in theatre programs in Edmonton, Toronto, Vancouver, New York, London, and Scotland; they continue to find educational opportunities around the globe.

SCONA THEATRE COMPANY

Part of the theatre experience is to connect with those artists who are working and creating in the community and professional world. Scona aims to inspire students to keep theatre as a part of their lives whether they choose to work as artists or continue as patrons while working in other worthy professions.
