On Monday, August 14, 2017 NLT will be holding a Board Meeting, where a special resolution to pass our new updated By-Laws will be made.  All members of Northern Light Theatre are welcome to attend.

Please RSVP by Friday, August 11, 2017 to Gina Moe (General Manager) at or by calling the Northern Light office at 780-471-1586

Welcome to Catherine Wenschlag!

Northern Light Theatre is pleased to welcome Catherine Wenschlag in the position of Artistic Associate at Northern Light Theatre.

Catherine is an actor, director, producer, and administrator who has been engaged in the Edmonton theatre community for – yes, it’s true – decades. Born in Rhode Island, and raised in Edmonton and St. Albert, she graduated from Victoria High School and the University of Alberta (Bachelor of Education). Catherine has also lived and worked in Vancouver, Salt Lake City and Los Angeles. She returned to Edmonton in 2007 and has been busy working in administration and finance (with the occasional acting gig) and volunteering for many theatres and festivals around town. Catherine is producing and directing a show at this year's Fringe, called The Sunset Syndrome by local playwright Alison Neuman, and will be directing The Women by Clare Luce Booth at Walterdale Theatre in February 2018. She is eager to meet Northern Light Theatre's patrons, as well as work with its staff, board and artists to assist NLT in achieving its goals and mandate.

We are so happy that Catherine has agreed to become a part of the NLT team, taking over the responsibilities of publicist, audience services, and volunteer co-ordinator for our Bingo fundraisers.

Welcome Catherine!

Catherine Wenschlag

Starting at $40.00 Packages for Previews & Matinees, $50.00 Regular Subscription Packages for Students/Seniors and $70.00 for Adults, and the $75.00 Opening Night Subscription Package including an after-show reception, Northern Light Theatre is offering some of the best subscription ticket prices in town - for some of the most compelling and exciting professional theatre you’re likely to see on Edmonton’s stages.

NLT 2017-2018 season

THE TESTAMENT OF MARY by Colm Tóibín (Canadian Premiere)
October 26 - November 4, 2017 |  PCL Studio, ATB Financial Arts Barns

Featuring Holly Turner | Directed by Trevor Schmidt

“They want what happened to live forever.  What is being written down today they say will change the world. …”

The Testament of Mary is a portrait of a very human woman – a mother – who is trying to make sense of and come to terms with the tragic death of her son.

“Tóibín’s skill lies in imagining Mary embittered perplexity without shutting the door on the story’s miraculous element.”
– Michael Billington – The Guardian

Holly Turner

Holly Turner

Holly trained at the Neighborhood Playhouse and performed in New York and regional theatres before coming back to Edmonton to work at the Citadel.  After a career outside theatre, Holly returned to the stage for NLT’s production of The Busy World is Hushed in 2007.  We are thrilled to be welcoming Holly Turner back to our stage in this wonderfully complex role.

NLT 2017-2018 season

DO THIS IN MEMORY OF ME / FAITES CECI EN MÉMOIRE DE MOI By Cat Walsh with French Translation by Manon Beaudoin
(World Premiere of a New Work)
Co-production with L’UniThéâtre
March 13 - 25, 2018 | L’UniThéâtre in La Cité Francophone

Featuring Brian Dooley, Steve Jodoin, and Nicole St. Martin
Directed by Trevor Schmidt

“Heavenly Father… I know you don’t make deals.  But if you could just grant me this one thing, I will never ask for anything again.   Deal?”

Montreal, 1963. Twelve-year-old Genevieve wants nothing more than to be an altar server at her church, but Father Paul tells her that girls are strictly not allowed. Martin, the oldest altar server (and seemingly Father John Paul's favourite) is more concerned with hockey than religion.  Genevieve prays to God to change his mind about having girls serve, and when Martin disappears on his way home from school, Genevieve wonders if her prayer has been answered - in a terrible way.

DO THIS IN MEMORY OF ME marks NLT’s third collaboration with L’UniThéâtre, presenting bilingual productions in both English and French.  We very are excited to be commissioning a new play by Edmonton Playwright Cat Walsh, with its translation being undertaken by Manon Beaudoin, last seen on NLT’s stage as Laurencienne Robichaud in THE PASSION OF NARCISSE MONDOUX.

NLT is pleased to be welcoming back Brian Dooley, last seen as Fleurette in FLORA AND FAWNA’S FIELD TRIP! WITH FLEURETTE and as Narcisse in THE PASSION OF NARCISSE MONDOUX.  NLT is also excited to be introducing Steve Jodoin and Nicole St. Martin in their NLT debuts.

Brian Dooley

Steve Jodoin

Steve Jodoin

He later decided to study theatre in Edmonton, became an actor, got married, had a little girl, had a little boy and he is co-owner of the video production company Productions Loft with whom he creates documentaries that make him really proud.

Nicole St. Martin

Nicole St. Martin

Nicole was born in Montreal and attended FACE School for the Arts. She was also a member of Montreal Children's Theatre where she was scouted to be on Sesame Street when she was six years old. NLT 2017-2018 season

SLUT by Brenda McFarlane (Alberta Premiere)
April 5 – 14, 2018 | PCL Studio, ATB Financial Arts Barns

Featuring Michelle Todd | Directed by Trevor Schmidt

“I guess I just think that sex is a gift from a generous and benevolent universe and all we’ve got to figure out is how to unwrap it”

Matilda is a woman who gives of herself freely.  So freely in fact, that the senior citizens from the complex next door have her arrested for running a brothel.  During an endless night of booking at the police station, Matilda runs a gamut of emotions: joy, regret, remorse, anger, despair and love.  Brenda McFarlane’s witty and fast paced play pries apart social stereotypes and stigmas in an insightful, light-hearted and comic examination of love and sex.

“McFarlane’s script delicately balances humor with an urgent questioning of gender and moral codes in a hypocritical society — and delivers amply on both counts.  …  Highly recommended.”
– eye Weekly Toronto

Michelle Todd

Michelle Todd

NLT is thrilled to be welcoming Michelle Todd to our stage, in the closing show of the 2017-2018 season.  A graduate of the GMCC Theatre Arts program Michelle has been active in the arts community ever since.  She has performed and written for multiple festivals in Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto, Winnipeg, Calgary, Saskatoon, Edmonton, Vancouver, and Seattle and has also worked with organizations, post-secondary institutions, local and provincial schools through theatre on social justice issues surrounding bullying, diversity, and racism.

The Battle for the Limelight
is set for September 9th, 2017!

Battle for the Limelight

This year’s Battle for the Limelight race is set to launch on Whyte Avenue on Saturday, September 9th at 1pm, and will conclude with a community Bar-B-Que for all race participants, volunteers, and supporters of the event.

Battle for the Limelight

The Battle for the Limelight is an arts community fundraiser that pits arts organizations and theatre companies against one another in an “Amazing Race” styled scavenger hunt.  Each team registered in the race raises money for the charity of their choice!   This is Northern Light Theatre’s fourth year building and hosting this great community fundraiser, and we are pleased to welcome our new community partner, The Old Strathcona Business Association.

An event with many moving parts, the Battle for the Limelight Fundraisers needs between 40-60 volunteers for this event, and 20-25 partnering businesses to host pit stops and help NLT out!  And we would sure appreciate some donations to go towards our own Team NLT running the race.

Your support will help Northern Light Theatre organize the logistics of the race, the post-race Bar-B-Que celebration and raise the Battle for the Limelight’s community profile. We are open to how you want to participate and finding the right fit for you!

Battle for the Limelight

There are so many possibilities to support and participate in this great community fundraiser!

BFTL volunteers oversee pit stop challenges and have as much - if not more - fun than the actual race participants, judging team’s and handing out clues during the race.  To Volunteer please email Catherine Wenschlag or call 780-471-1586
