“I’ll be honest. I’m doing well. Really well. But I’m not gonna pay one cent for her God damn funeral. Call the city. They’ll come, take the body, dump it in the ground before lunch. No charge.”

For Dirdra and Janice, Mom’s dead and it’s a great day. There’s going to be a celebration, and hopefully nothing will go flying out the window – including one of them. A viciously comic and tense fifteen-year reunion between two sisters on the day of their mother’s unforgettable death. Featuring Louise Lambert and Arielle Rombough.   World premiere.

An Ongoing Interview with SISTER SISTER playwright, Barbara Blumenthal-Ehrlich

TREVOR:  What is it about the relationships between sisters that are so charged and interesting to playwrights?

BARBARA:  Drama’s all about conflict. Siblings are all about rivalry. And female rivalry is as biting as it gets. So, sisters make great characters and great theatre. My play’s a little different because there’s an intense physicality you don’t often see in a play about women – springing from a seething fury at the root of their relationship. That their fury can be embedded in their love – or their love embedded in their fury – plays out in an explosive, uplifting conclusion of SISTER SISTER.

TREVOR: This is the world premiere of your play. How nervous are you? What are you hoping the production captures? What do you hope the audience walks away with? (This is another question I hate asking. And answering.)

BARBARA:  I couldn't be more thrilled to have the SISTER SISTER world premiere at Northern Light! I hope audiences are ready for a wild ride because there are lots of surprises and power shifts, and big reveals that ultimately explain the pent up vitriol between these two women. But during this emotional rollercoaster, there are genuine moments of sisterly connection — dare I say deep-seeded love — that transcends their bitterness and tortured past. Blink, and you’ll miss it because these two aren’t big on letting down their guard. But eventually these moments of vulnerability add up. And, in an intense skirmish at the end of the play, Dirdra and Janice mange to exorcise their toxic history and finally free themselves from the past. While I don’t wish this family on anyone, I’m hoping audiences see a little bit of their own family struggles in these women’s journey. And, despite their despicable behavior and personality flaws, there’s a humanity there.   Hopefully we’re rooting for them in spite of ourselves.
