We received one single letter of dissent after our production of MISS MARGARIDA’s WAY last season. In it, the disgruntled audience member stated that she felt we had ‘tricked her’ into attending our production and that she was expecting a comedy about ‘grade eight hi-jinks’. She went on to say that she was surprised to discover the play had such shocking material and that there was such an extensive use of foul language. I can only presume she did not see the medium size print on the poster declaring ‘Extreme Language Warning’. Nor did she, apparently, notice the big ‘F’ word in the poster’s main image. Nor did she read the repeated language and content warnings in any of the publicity materials or extensive media and press coverage.
She clearly didn’t know what she would be getting at Northern Light Theatre.
For thirty-two years now, our loyal and ever growing audiences have come to expect challenging, inventive and alternative works that skirt a wide berth around the edge of the mainstream. Sometimes new work, sometimes old- always exciting and thought-provoking.
This season could very well be called (tongue planted firmly in cheek) our ‘Family Values’ season, for all of the plays presented explore religion, family, legality and sexuality, or (m)any various combinations of the above.
The most commonly asked question I’ve heard lately? “Where’s the nudity?” Yes, it’s been awhile. I’m not guaranteeing there will be any skin shown on our stage this season. But I’m not saying there won’t be either. It’s good to keep an audience guessing…
